Laughter in Violet (1999)
During the spring, wild violets bloom en mass in my back yard. A zoomed in and cropped photo was the inspiration for this painting. I chose to place the flowers somewhat off-center for a better composition, and let them be the centerpiece here rather than the foliage. As I was using the foliage itself as the background, I laid it down first with large, flat brushes and thinned paint, then roughed in the flowers over top. Then working from the back forward, I layered in stronger colors and added in details with smaller brushes and thicker paint.
