Character Studies: d’Astael & d’Alsaise (abt. 1990)
Faces have always been my weakness, and I still struggle with them even today; my early attempts at portraits (and there were some even earlier than this) were quite pitiful.  At least I can say with some measure of relief that I’ve improved a bit over the years.  I forced myself to learn out of sheer necessity, in order to create character sketches for my short stories and novellas; having a solid image of what someone is supposed to look like helps to more firmly establish the character and his personality in my mind.  The above watercolor sketches are the leads of my Castles in the Air trilogy (Revolution, Challenge, and Cromyste), Rin ‘Wolf’ d’Astael and Taira d’Alsaise.
