why i hate portraiture

Getting A Head (2000)
I’ve always struggled with realistically portraying people, and wouldn’t you know that almost every 2D or studio drawing course at uni had portraiture as a required component?  One would think that since it was a drawing class, there would be some explanation as to what we should be doing or how: what shapes, proportions, etc were the best to use in order not to produce a lopsided, cross-eyed head.  Nope.  We got newsprint, a box of charcoal, and a model, and were told to go to town…develop our own style.  Hate to say it, but when it comes to drawing people my style stinks.  I’m lucky if they come out looking like people at all, most of the time.  Sigh.
